Review: Shatter me

Shatter me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi
Published: November 15th 2011
Publisher: Harper

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

The writing... OMG the writing is amazing. It has all the feels. ALL THE FEELS. It sounds so poetic, so like REAL thought and feelings.
And the crossover sentences, they’re such a perfect touch, I can’t decide weather I’m in her head or her notebook. And how sometimes the sentences are repeated 3 times... yeah great touch for someone in an Asylum.
Chapter 1 and I was hooked. Chapter 4 and I was seriously thinking of not going out with my friend because this was just so good I had to go on. (I did went out, mind you... and told her all about the 4 chapters I had read so far and how much she needed to get the book)

It has a little 1984 feeling, with the world divided in three and people in power trying to make everything new, including language.
I can also see the “The Hunger Games” thingy in it but at the same time, a combination of different elements that not only make it unique, it makes it perfect.

In this dystopian setting, The Reestablishment rules the world. A world where animals are almost extinct, and real food too. But the promises the movement made were empty and some people fight back, more and more everyday, so The Reestablishment thinks that Juliette might be the very thing they need to get what they want: Get rid of rebels.

Juliette is broken. Scared. Empty. After so long in there she doesn’t know who she is... after so long of being treated like a monster she believes them.

It’s okay,” he whispers. “You’ll be okay.”
Truth is a jealous, vicious mistress that never ever sleeps, is what I don’t tell him. I’ll never be okay.
-Shatter Me

Her character is probably the best thing from the book.

I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.
-Juliette, Shatter Me

She’s so well developed!
Her touch kills people, it takes away their life force and for that the world has always treated her like a pariah, kids in school bullied her. She has every right in the world to be angry, resentful and look for revenge. But Juliette has never wanted anything else than fit in, to be love and to feel the warm and comfort of another human being.

One of my favourite things is how Juliette can describe such common things is such a beautiful way, how everything seems so new and wonderful. How you can feel her emotions towards them so easily with every word.

Adam is like sunshine, so innocent and pure in contrast to the Asylum. And then so strong, always by her side, always protecting her. *cue the swooning*
He’s strong and fierce and a warrior. He will fight for those he loves and what he believes in.

Warner is one of the leaders of the Reestablishment and he’s been obsessed with Juliette since he heard of what she could do. His twisted ways and crazy brain gave me a love/hate feeling. In his head, he’s giving Juliette the opportunity of her life to revenge all the wrong that’s been done to her, he’s protecting her from the evil world.
Yeah, totally crazy and yet so well written that, sometimes, I could see his logic and almost believe him.

There are 15,000 feelings of disbelief hole-punched in my heart. I’m tempted by recklessness, aching aching aching, desperate forever for what I can never have.
-Juliette, Shatter Me

I have 15.000 feelings right now, too! Can’t wait for the next book :)

BLOG TOUR + GIVEAWAY: THE SECOND SIGN

1:18 PM 6 Comments

The Second Sign by Elizabeth Arroyo

Amazon.com / B&N / Goodreads
Bred to believe in the war between angels and demons, Gabby has come to the conclusion that love is responsible for war, jealousy, and all the other deadly sins she can think of. So when she’s exiled to the middle of nowhere for getting kicked out of her fifth school for fighting, she doesn't expect to meet Jake. Much less fall in love. But Jake is quickly drawn to the eerie beauty of her violet eyes while Gabby is unsettled by their undeniable connection.

When a demon guardian comes to collect her soul, she refuses to give it up. She’s not a demon. She can’t be. Her father and twin brother are angels. The demon gives Gabby twenty-four hours to decide her allegiance, and then starts killing her short list of friends, leaving a message behind: She is the Second Sign.

As Gabby and Jake begin to unravel the mystery behind the Second Sign, she learns Jake may be the key to saving her soul. But it means a sacrifice has to be made that will change their lives forever.

What would you do if you believed in Heaven and Hell but they didn’t believe in you? And what about if you don’t believe in them, but they believe in you?

Gabby is different in many ways: she’s not all human... her father is an Angel, and so is her twin brother. Also, whenever she touches someone... she can feel their emotions. Oh, did we mention Gabby has the worst luck ever? Her birthdays are not a day you wanna spend near her, bad things happen.

When the summer arrives, Gabby is sent back to the middle of nowhere to her family lake house and on her first day she meets Jake, who takes an immediate liking to her, even when she so desperately wants to keep him away.

The first chapter of the book hint at the dark side if this story and the dirty work of Angels and Demons alike. Everyone has free will and they will influence you at the best of their capacity to get your soul.
But as soon as they get to the lake, the romance and connection between Gabby and Jake jumps at you. Their relationship is really beautiful. Gabby wants to protect Jake from her world, without knowing how much he belongs in it.

But that’s not all... a Demon is after Gabby, he tells her she’s the Second Sign... but what does that mean?
With her brother and guardian MIA, Gabby has no choice but to trust Jake with a few secrets and ask for his help. Until the Demon marks her and gives her 24hs to call her, and starts killing people.

This book has a bit of everything: Romance, Mystery, Good Guys, Bad Guys, in between guys that mess with your head, and some very creepy horror-movie-like scenes... like that Legion scene with the old Lady? Yeah... that creepy!

Oh And the ending... is a cliffhanger alright! I didn't see that coming, it fits and leaves you hanging for more.

Miss Arroyo’s writing is really good, the story pulls you in from the beginning and the characters are very interesting. Everyone has a little bit of background into it that makes the story even better.

Instead of saying more, he brushed his fingertips along my cheek, and his halo glimmered. I could hear the waves slapping the rocks behind us, the wind driving them in. That same wind whipped against my skin, but the touch of his hand on my face was all I could think about. It sent a current through both of us and filled me with longing for something I wasn’t sure I understood.

“I’m sorry.” He stepped back and shoved his hands into his pockets as the light around him faded. “You don’t know what it’s like. Being near you now, remembering those moments we had…” His hair blew into his eyes, but this time he didn’t move. I wanted to brush it back, but I didn’t know how he’d react. Would touching him be bad?

“You want to know who you were?” he asked. “You may look different, but you’re the same. I look into your eyes and see you.” He took in a deep breath, fixing his attention on the horizon. I’d seen and heard so much now that the logical part of my brain had long since given up arguing with me. I could feel what he was saying was true. All of it.

BLOG TOUR: THE SHADOWGUARD SERIES

Hey loves!
Today we're part of the Blog tour of The Shadowguard series by Michelle Zink! For more Swoo Worthy books, check out

Temptation's Heat by Michelle Zink (The Shadowguard Series #1)

When Rowen Black is assigned to the elite unit of angelic assassins known as the Shadowguard, he thinks his biggest challenge will be overcoming his less-than-stellar reputation. But that’s before he meets his match in Scarlet Montgomery.

Beautiful, strong, and with a temper to match Rowen’s own, Scarlet is focused on the Shadowguard and her possible future as its leader. She’s become an expert at keeping her personal life separate from the Guard, all too aware that as the boss’s daughter, fellow warriors see her not as someone to be respected, but as someone to be protected.

Avoiding entanglements gets a lot harder when Rowen saunters into the room. Rowen puts the bad in "bad boy." Their connection is hot, visceral, and instantaneous.

When the pair are assigned to a joint investigation, they come face-to-face with their undeniable attraction, forcing Scarlet to consider that the connection is not only physical, but a destiny written in the halls of time.

Let's start with THIS IS HOT. Rowen is tall dark and Sexy, forget about handsome. Plus he's Scottish, he has an accent to die for!

Temptation's Heat is a short novella, the first in The Shadowuard Series, with action, sexual tension, mystery and great characters.

Rowan belongs to a secret group called the Shadow guard, they are what you'd call Angel, but they don't have wings or live on Heaven. Nope, they are like your regular neighbor... kinda. He's the Bad Boy who never quite follows the rules.  And this is his last chance to prove he's worthy of being in the Guard.
Scarlet is the boss' daughter. She's a girl and she's small. She has a lot to prove so the rest of the Guard won't see her as the week little girl they have to protect and more as an equal. She's the kind of girl you don't wanna mess around with.

Since the moment they first see each other, sexual tension jumps at you from the page. The instant chemistry between them is excellent.

**He walked toward her, hyper-aware of his nakedness. “I don’t mind if you don’t,” he said, reaching past her to the towel that hung on the door.
She raised her chin. “No. Of course not.” She waved toward the towel. “Do  … whatever you need to do. I just wanted to tell you that Lily is serving breakfast. She wondered if you would be joining us.”
“Well, you can tell Lily I’ll be right down. Unless you can think of something that would make missing breakfast worthwhile.”**

Scarlet's father, Ambrose, sends them both on a mission to figure out what really happened to the dead Revenant belonging to the Legion (basically a bad guy), and stop what could possibly be a war for all human's soul, and spending a lot of time together makes harder to deny the attraction between them.

If I have one complain, it would be this is too short. I'd love to see more of them, but that's the beauty of short novellas. Somehow, in less than 100 pages, Michelle Zink put everything you need in a story (and first book in a series), character's background, introducing the rest of the important character's, and enough mystery for the rest of the novellas in the series to get into.

Temptation's Kiss by Michelle Zink (The Shadowguard Series #2)

Lily Montgomery is perfectly happy taking care of everyone else. That is, until her friendship with Shadowguard warrior, Kane Dawson, begins to blossom into something more.

But Lily has a secret. One that will keep her from ever making her feelings known to Kane.

One of the Shadowguard’s fiercest warriors, Kane has a soft spot for Lily. A long-standing member of the Shadowguard, he can’t figure out when his feelings for Ambrose Montgomery’s youngest daughter morphed from brotherly affection into desire and an unfamiliar longing that feels a lot like love.

Kane holds himself in check knowing that Lily deserves better. A man in a suit, dinner at six every night, rosy-cheeked children who won’t have to worry that their father might be killed by one of the Legion’s wraiths.

But when the pair are thrown together by a set of circumstances beyond their control, they are forced to confront their growing passion and decide if love is worth the risk of baring it all.

The second book in this series brings in the sweetness we didn't see in the first one but with the same amount of attraction between the characters.

Lily's the sweetest girl. She doesn't like violence, so despite being part of the descendants, she's not part of the Guard. She prefers to stay home and make sure everyone there is taken care of while she enjoys cooking and baking.
Kane is one of the best warriors of the Guard and he would do anything for Lily and to make sure she's happy.

But when the attraction between the two becomes too much and an unfortunately event at the house takes them to a place just the two of them, denial is nowhere to be found.
And while the relationship between Scarlet and Rowan was more visceral, Kane and Lily are a really sweet couple.

**“I realize I’ve never thanked you,” she said softly.
He couldn’t hide his surprise. “Thank me? For what?”

She seemed to consider her words. “For being my friend. I don’t have many of them.”
The vulnerability in her voice, as if the confession were some kind of strike against her character, made him want to take her in his arms then and there, shield her from anything that made her think she was less than perfect exactly as she was.
“That’s only because you’re so busy taking care of everyone else,” Kane said. “Don’t you ever think about making another life? A life of your own?”
“I like taking care of people,” she said softly. “Although …”
“What?” he prodded.
She ducked her head a little, her cheeks turning pink. “Well, I’ve always thought I might like to have a bakery. Nothing big or fancy. Just a little place where people could escape real life for a minute or two. A place that was warm and smelled liked vanilla and coffee.” She laughed. “It sounds silly.”
He was hit with a rush of tenderness. He could see it; Lily making small talk with the customers, a couple of cherub-cheeked kids running around, squealing with delight when Kane stepped through the door.
It was a pipe dream. For him, at least.
He forced a smile. “It doesn’t sound silly. It sounds perfect. And you’d be just the person to do it."**

Temptation's Kiss gives us another clue to solve what happened to the dead Revenant and gives us a little bit more details on the next characters for the third book.
I can't wait to see how the series ends and read more of the awesome job of Michelle Zink.

Temptation's Fire by Michelle Zink (The Shadowguard Series #3)

Maggie O’ Reilly has her hands full. It’s all she can do to hold down her job at small-town newspaper and pay the nursing home bills for her deteriorating father. But a lead on a story from Ivan Montgomery might be just the thing to win her the promotion -- and raise -- she needs to secure her father’s care.

Ivan Montgomery isn’t exactly Mr. Popular. As the son of Ambrose Montgomery, head of the Shadowguard, Ivan has a reputation for being surly and confrontational. But somehow Maggie’s spirit and vulnerability make him want to be a better man.

Too bad a future between them is impossible. As an outsider, Maggie can never know that Shadowguard Security is a front for the Alliance, a group of angelic descendants who keep mankind balanced between the forces of  light and dark. And that means she can never know who -- and what -- Ivan really is.

But as the pair come closer to solving the mystery of who is framing the Shadowguard for murder, their attraction becomes impossible to deny. When a confrontation with a deadly foe forces them to face their feelings -- and their passion-- they will have to answer the question: can true love survive the ultimate secret?

BLOG TOUR - REVIEW + GIVEAWAY : Making His Mark

5:00 AM 8 Comments

Published January 8th 2013
*E-copy provided by the Tour Host for review¨*

Alexis Catori is ready to let go of her past and move forward with her future. She wants a permanent reminder of this step in the form of a tattoo. Unfortunately, the best artist she knows is also the guy she’d rather sucker punch than be friends with, Bo Nantan.

Bo Nantan loves tattooing. It gives him everything he’s dreamed of having: freedom, friends, and the chance to draw. That should be enough to make him happy, but one woman’s been invading his thoughts since an unplanned kiss after a bet he shouldn't have made. Too bad Alexis Catori is his own personal definition of frenemy.

With Bo's prompt refusal to do her tattoo, a storm of emotion erupts between them. It doesn't take long to admit the attraction they both feel. But when her past returns, Alexis doubts her ability to move on as planned.

Let's start with the cover... super sexy right? And now look at the blurb... yup sounds good, uh?

Making His Mark is a fast read with very few slow moments. While I enjoyed the fast pace of the book sometimes it felt a bit rushed. I'd have like a bit more of tension between Alexis and Bo.

The writing is great, the banter between Alexis and the boys, Travis and Matt, was really fun to read. The pointless arguments between her and Bo was something I liked about the book. I say pointless because, the two of them just love to argue, and it was entertaining.
Now, the only thing about the writing I didn't like was the transition between one POV and the other, but then this is probably more formatting and anything else... it just jumps from one to the other without warning.

The plot doesn't have many twists, what you get from the blurb is basically it as the book focus on Alexis trying to get a tattoo and Bo refusing her but overall is a great light read, especially for a weekend ;)

BLOG TOUR: When We Collide

When We Collide by A.L. Jackson

Published: November 2nd 2012
Publisher: Sapphire Star Publishing
*E-copy provided by the blog tour host for review*

William has spent six years running from his past and the last eight months trying to rid his mind of the dreams that increasingly haunt his nights. Trapped in a world of false ambitions and feigned affections, William knows he’s reached a breaking point and something’s going to give.
Maggie had lived her entire life without hope until one man showed her what it meant to be loved. He’d been her light in a lifetime of darkness. Six years ago, that darkness stole him away. Without him, she’s surrendered herself to an existence she doesn’t know how to escape.
When the family William left behind is struck by tragedy, he is called back to the one place he’s sworn to never return to again.
In a moment that will change his life forever, William comes face to face with the girl who, with one look, captured his heart. He is unable to ignore the buried desires and the hope for the future they’d once believed they’d have.
Now William is ready to fight to take back what had been stolen from him six years before.
But he never imagined what that fight might cost him.

Our thoughts....

“Because it shouldn't hurt to be touched.”

I can't tell you how much I love this book. When We Collide is a beautiful story, full of love, pain, hope and abuse. The characters take you with them in their heartbreaking journey, and I felt so connected to them. I must warn you though, get your tissues ready this is worst than a Disney movie in the tears scale.

It catches you from page one, as if that dedication doesn't pick your interest, the book opens with William's nightmare, a glimpse to his painful past and a pick at a present day he hates.

Maggie has live her entire life in an abusive home, changing her father's fist for someone much worst. But that's all she's known... all that was ever told was how little she was worth, and that leaves marks that you can't erase. She's broken, scared and in many ways fragile, but at the same she's strong and she's one of the most selfless and loving people and all her life, she's tried to protect others from it.

William comes from a completely different place. He has the happy, loving family. His mother taught him to face his problems, his father that you protect the ones you love. And he tries, he tries so hard you just want everything to be perfect again. Reading from his POV as William watches the girl he loves suffer so much and seeing she doesn't want to be save broke my heart.
But reading Maggie's while she dealt with the abuse was heart wrenching. Is easy to judge from the outside, and many do, but reading it from a 1st POV like that really puts things into perspective.

The book is about decisions and mistakes. Both, William and Maggie, make the wrong choices to protect themselves, the other and in the name of best intentions. And they had to live with those mistakes for six years, facing endless what if, dreams of a better life and the ugly consequences of what they did, but when Will returns home for good all the reasons rush back and this time they can't escape so easy.

The end of the book put me on edge. Collisions aren't a pretty thing and this one wasn't an exception, but all the tension and tears were so worth it. When We Collide is an excellent book that delivers emotions (good and bad) in each and every page. And the Epilogue... perfect.

I'm really looking forward to read more about A.L. Jackson :)

BLOG TOUR + EXCERPT: HUNTER MOON

5:00 AM 0 Comments
HUNTER MOON (The Moon Series #4) by Jeanette Battista

Review + Excerpt

**This is the 4th book in the series so the summary and review might contain spoilers**

Published November 21st 2012
Pulisher:  Createspace

*Copy provided by the author for review*

With the threat of a werehyena takeover dealt with, Kess, Finn, and Rafe can finally enjoy the tentative peace Miami has to offer. As Kess moves forward with her decision to open up the territory to peaceful weres, she knows that the Keepers of Divine Order—a group of werejackal assassins—are watching her every move. If her plan fails, she knows they won’t hesitate to eliminate her and her friends.

When several werehyenas suddenly disappear and Mebis, the Keeper assigned to Miami, goes unexpectedly missing, Kess fears the worst. But even she’s unprepared for this latest threat: a hunter hiding in plain sight whose only goal is killing werecreatures. Can Kess and her friends survive this most dangerous game?

I think this book is my fav in the series.

Things are looking good for the gang. The werehyenas are put of the question and now Kess, Finn and Rafe can concentrate in making their idea of the Council work. And avoid death by the hands of the keepers. But then a Hunter comes to town, and he wants to finish his collection before the time is out.

This book had a few surprises I didn't see coming. Hunter Moon is full of secret plans, unexpected events   and lots of prank courtesy of Finn and Rafe.

What I really loved about this book was the chance to see how all the characters grow and develop into their roles.

Kess is now in full Clean Leader mode, she understands her duty to her people in a different light and she wants to keep Miami safe.
Finn proves his strengths and his maturity like never before. And Rafe kinda learns to stand up for himself. And still this last two can act like 5 y.o. making sure you have a laugh.
We have Laila back, and with Laila in the picture... wild behavior is at order. We see a vulnerable side to her in this, and I really liked it.

The story of the Hunter, Lukas, was really good. The perfect character you can hate for all he's doing, and at the same time, you do have a little sympathy for him.

A character that surprised me was Zamiel. At first, I wasn't so sure about him and what that could mean for the whole story (He appears in the prologue) but as the story unfolded, I got to like him. (as much as you can like him).

I'll admit, I cried with this one... The last conversation between Mebis and Laila? Yeah... get tissues. But it was so sweet and perfect, it was totally worth the tears!

With this book, Jeanette brings more elements to this world full of werecreatures, and it works out perfectly. I couldn't put it down. The tension grows through all the book in a game of hunter and pray. And this time, they're threaten by more than a rival clan while the pressure of The Keppers is always present.

Some say this is the last book in the series, I don't know about that... the book ends with a cliffhanger and I really hope there will be more...

EXCERPT

Three Years Earlier

His name was Lukas Jaegar. He was going to make a deal with the devil.
He lit the saltpeter mixture, the dust igniting in the pentacle pattern he had carved into the wood-planked floor. The flames flickered out almost immediately, leaving a burning line of embers that glowed redly in the darkened room. He stepped inside another pentacle, this one drawn in black paint on the hardwood floor. He’d memorized the incantation months ago, but it had taken him some time to get all of the ingredients he would need for the summoning.
He wanted to make sure he got everything right. Being eaten by a demon wasn’t the way he wanted to spend his eighteenth birthday.
He breathed deeply to steady himself. He was in his family’s cabin in the woods. They hadn’t used it in years—not since the nightmarish hunting trip with his father and brother. There was no one else around for miles, which suited Lukas just fine since he couldn’t afford any interruptions. During the weeks of preparation leading up to this moment he hadn’t been worried—there was too much else to occupy his mind. But now that he was here, alone, with the moment of acting upon him, his whole body shook with nerves.
It was too late to turn back, even if he had wanted to. There was nothing else for him now.
Lukas spoke, his voice low and rough. Candle flames flickered on the edges of his vision. His words came faster, as if they were being pulled from him now, as if something else was controlling the spell he cast. He forced himself to slow, to say the words properly and keep his focus on the center of the empty pentacle.
He finished the incantation with the final command. “Zamiel, I summon you! Zamiel, I call you! Zamiel, come forth!”
Nothing happened.
Lukas wasn’t stupid and he had the patience that all hunters had. He merely stood in his own pentacle, staring at the one opposite him. He had waited for hours for a deer to show itself; he could wait a few minutes to see if a demon would appear.
At first there was nothing. Then a sign: a telltale haze around the edges of the candles behind the pentacle. It was like the heat shimmer that he sometimes saw on hot summer days. He waited a few more moments to see if whatever was there would solidify further. Lukas thought it might be playing a game with him; he’d read that demons were cagey and loved to catch humans out. He had no intention of stepping out of his protective pentacle until he knew the thing was banished or had agreed to his terms.
“Zamiel! Show yourself!”
The grin appeared first. It was wide and sharp, and contained a great number of very pointed teeth. The grin was followed by the rest of Zamiel, who appeared in the form of a tall, thin, dark-haired man. His age was indeterminate; he could have been twenty or sixty. His skin was smooth and pale, almost lacking of color, making him look rather dead. He was dressed in a form-fitting black suit.
“Hello,” the demon said, drawing it out in a leer.
“Zamiel?” Lukas frowned at the entity.
“You did call me.” The demon prowled the edges of the pentacle, testing its boundaries, then stood with its arms by its sides in the center of it.
Lukas swallowed hard, a little rattled. He hadn’t actually thought that he’d be successful, no matter how badly he wanted to be. But here was Zamiel, trapped in a pentacle, awaiting his command. Still, in all of the times he’d played the scenario out in his head, he always asked for the same thing.
“I want to make a deal.”
Zamiel’s left eyebrow lifted. That was the only expression he made.
Lukas stopped, waiting for some other reaction. He hadn’t expected the demon to leap up and clap its hands in joy while singing a jaunty tune, but he had expected a bit more of a response. “Didn’t you hear me?” he asked finally, losing his patience. “I said, I want to make a deal!”
“Oh, I heard you,” the demon said, pausing to examine its perfectly tipped oval fingernails, fingernails that tapered into sharp points at the end. “I’m just waiting for the rest of it.”
Lukas narrowed his eyes. He’d already planned what he was going to say, what to ask for. If he was honest with himself, he’d known for years. He came from a long line of hunters—the men in his family had been great hunters for centuries. And Lukas wanted to be the greatest of them all. Perhaps then his father would look at him again, and actually see him.
His head bobbed once in a slight nod, an unconscious gesture. “I want to be the greatest hunter ever. I want to hunt and kill things no other hunter has ever dared.”
