Shadows Review

Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout Review

Dawson is a Luxen, he's from another planet and must keep his identity a secret from humans. If the Department Of Defense finds out people know their secret, they'll disappear.

Bethany is new to town and boys are the last thing on her mind, her home life is complicated enough. But when Dawson and Beth met in class they were drawn to each other. Luxen are not suppose to be with humans, but Dawson doesn't want to stay away from the one person, human or Luxen, who makes him feel like he belongs.

The best word to describe this novella is bittersweet. The relationship between Dawson and Bethany is really romantic. It's they're innocent first love, both trying to get to know each other, and they discover how much they have in common while their love grows.

Bethany nor Dawson's family approves of their relationship for very different reasons, but that doesn't keep them apart. They learn to accept that, and more importantly they learn to accept their differences.
Knowing the end of this book didn't make my reading experience any different, except for the fact that I was dreading the end. I kept looking for a, "Maybe someone made a mistake in Obsidian," explanation that never came.

Armentrout takes us back to the beginning of the LUX series with this and is a perfect short book. I loved the dynamic of the triplets. You get to see how they act amongst other Luxen and themselves, including how close they were. While Dawson is closer to Dee, it's because Daemon feels the need to act as the adult responsible for them. It's easy to see that Dee and Dawson both respect and love their older brother.

Official Shadows Summary

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Onyx Review

SPOILER ALERT!

“What are you doing? Hands off, mofo.”

Sorry, I had to spoil it for you, the word “mofo” is in Onyx, just like in Shadows. Sorry, that is all I can tell you.

JUST KIDDING! Now you probably hate me...

Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout Review

You all probably already read Shadows, now go and read it again. There were lots of twists, and if you read Shadows, it hinted at some of the those twists. So unlike me, who read Onyx first and was like, “OMGGGGGGGGG NO WAY!” on everything, you'll already be guessing stuff after reading Shadows.

You will love Daemon even more in this book. Like he promises at the end of Obsidian, he indulges in the challenge of winning Katy over. There were times you wanted to shake Katy until she listened to her heart. There were also times you wanted to smack Daemon into not being a butthole, but you can't help but love him anyways. Also, the dynamic between Daemon and Katy doesn't change at all even though they're connected now, so we still get a lot of silly arguments.

There are some new characters, some of them were mentioned in Obsidian, and some are entirely new. In this book they become involved in the grand scheme of things. The new boy doesn't help matters, since Daemon and jealousy don't go well together. He is the opposite of Daemon. If he was in another book he'd potentially be the hot guy in the story, but he's going against Daemon here, and no one can win against him. Then again, he doesn't come with the complications that being with Daemon causes. We also get more insight on the rest of the characters feelings and lives.

There's a lot of suspense: Who to trust? What to do? What does the DOD want? What's the best choice? What the hell just happened?

Onyx has a lot of things going on at once and will take you on an emotional roller coaster. It's full of the witty dialogue we all loved in Obsidian. There are moments of tension that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Most revelations will leave you gasping. "OMG" goes through your head in every page. While reading it I laughed, I went all, "aww", I screamed at a character NOT to do something, and I cried.

My OCD went overboard and corrected the whole book since it's the advanced unedited version, so hopefully those will all be corrected when it's published. The only errors were grammatical or had to do with movement, which isn't bad compared to some big mistakes in Obsidian, like changing clothes, eyes, or glow color. That's for a later post though.

That is all I'm allowed to tell you all, hope this helps ease the pain of waiting. And hopefully I didn't tell you guys too much and get into trouble. :/

Official Onyx Summary

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarre connection. I’ve sworn him off even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But against all common sense, I’m falling for him. Hard.

Our relationship issues aren’t out biggest problem…

The Department of Defense is here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And when a new boy shows up a school with a secret of his own, things get complicated fast. I need to choose between my own instincts and Daemon’s.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. Daemon’s never going to stop searching until gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies.
