He lay down on the bed and pulled her into his arms before tugging the bedding over the two of them. It was a little damp in places because of all their ice play, and he smiled at the reminder. “What I am into is finding out what the person I’m with wants to try. I’m into good old missionary on a Sunday morning when I’m hungover and just want to get off. I’m into sex in a field while hiking or on the deck of my cottage. Some days, I’m into trying a hundred different positions before getting off. I’m into cuffs and toys and exploring. I’m not into being called Sir, or hurting someone, or expecting submission. I just want to explore, and I want to find someone who wants to do that with me.”
“Hmm.”
“Hmm? What are you into?” he asked, kissing her forehead.
“It would appear to be you. I’m into you, Elliott. And missionary position. And outdoor sex. And a hundred positions. And I’d really like to figure out whether a reverse cowgirl is really a thing.”
Elliott barked out a laugh. “Reverse cowgirl?”
Kendalee chuckled. “Yeah. Like . . . your . . . you know . . . it doesn’t naturally bend that way, right?”
“Oh Lord, woman. It’s got quite the range of movement, but next up, we’re going reverse cowgirl.”
They lay in silence, and Elliott clicked off the light.
“Elliott?”
“Yeah, Lee.”
“Don’t make me fall in love with you. I’m not sure my heart is quite ready for it yet.”
His own heart skipped a beat at her declaration.
Because it meant she was thinking about it. About him, that way.
“Can’t help you with that one, honey. It’s probably the only thing I can’t do for you.”
Kendalee sighed against him, burrowing closer into his side. “Thought so.”
Elliott smiled as he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

About Scarlett Cole

The tattoo across my right hip says it all really. A Life Less Ordinary. Inked by the amazingly talented Luke Wessman at the Wooster Street Social Club (a.k.a. New York Ink). Why is it important? Well, it sums up my view on life. That we should all aspire to live a life that is less boring, less predictable. Be bold, and do something amazing. I’ve made some crazy choices. I’ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada were I met my own, personal hero – all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.

I’ve wanted to be a writer for a really long time. Check through my office cupboards or my computer and you’ll find half written stories and character descriptions everywhere. Now I'm getting the chance to follow that dream.

Review: Mask of Shadows

11:00 AM 0 Comments

Mask of Shadows (Untitled #1) by Linsey Miller
Published: August 29th 2017
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

Perfect for fantasy fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo, the first book in this new duology features a compelling gender fluid main character, impressive worldbuilding, and fast-paced action. Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class―and the nobles who destroyed their home. When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand―the Queen's personal assassins, named after the rings she wears―Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge. But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

*I Received an ARC in exchange of an honest review.*

I devoured this book. Mask of Shadows is the perfect combination of fantasy and action. Forget the Hunger Games, this fight to death to become the Queen's new Assassin will have you gripping the edge of your seat.

Sal is a highway thief. He grew up on the street, working for a ruthless master and wishing for a different life until one day a flyer to the audition presents the best opportunity for a new life.

Sal is one of the best characters I've read in a while. The fact that he's gender fluid adds a new dimention and to me was a very enjoyable experience. I loved reading how some of the characters just went with it and how others found more difficult. IIt was a nice touch of the author to add it in a way that drew attention to the subject and make it be just another little detail to the story. Sal's ambition isn't about money or fame but the chance to revenge and justice for his people, but next to his competition he's the least qualified for the job. Reading about his experience with the killings, how it affected him but didn't stopped him was like a fresh air in the genre. While most would chose to write the character with remorse and and shock for taking a life, Sal treats it almost distant. He regrets it, but understand is the way it has to be.

The rest of the characters add an unique light to every aspect at the story. From the more experienced fighter to each of the Assassins trainning them. I personally loved the relationship between Sal and his maid, Maud. She's honest in her intentions and complements and understands Sal in ways no one else does. They found a nice rhythm to work together and among all the stranger there, she's someone he can trust.

The world building is excelent. I didn't feel confused about the history of this new land or the politics in it and the writing paints a beautiful and dangerous world. Sal's development through the book was great. From starry eyed follower to an independant thinker and I was more than proud of him, but that's all I can say without giving away details.

I loved everything about Linsey Miller's new book. From the main's character journey and development, the world building that transport you to a diffent place and time with just one page and the politics plot to make the story move forward with twists and unexpected results all along.

Excerpt

It’s feels like an eternity since I’ve been home. In reality, it’s only been a year.
My slow walk to the house is surreal. The lawn is as pristine as ever, each blade of grass shorn the same height by Jude’s meticulous mowing. The red geraniums I planted years ago are thriving. And the dent in the porch rail, caused by my foot accidentally connecting with the wood, is still visible. But I don’t remember the house being this uninspiring shade of blue, or the crack on the front stoop being this wide. This house, this city, used to be my whole world. It seemed a lot bigger then.
Discordance skitters over my spine: what should be familiar is foreign, relief mingles with anxiety. Time snaps and contracts as I knock on the front door, and suddenly it seems like an hour since I left. A nanosecond.
The door swings open, and the reason for my hasty departure is staring at me. She’s as pretty as I remember—maybe more, damn her. Green eyes that used to flutter when I kissed her, full lips that whispered confidences in my ear.
Now, her face is frozen in a hostess’ smile. Her fingers worry the bottom button of her pink cardigan and the threads begin to loosen. She doesn’t know what to do because she wasn’t expecting me. I guess it wasn’t nice showing up a day early.
“Ryan. You’re home.”
Home. Does she mean mine or hers?
I had almost forgotten what Lizzie’s voice sounded like, but its husky depth brings the memories of the six months we spent loving each other rushing back.
Well, I had been loving her. She’d been falling in love with my brother.
I wait for my heart to ache, but there’s only a small twinge. That’s a surprise. In my mind, this was all so much more dramatic and intense. Hard stares and pinched lips. A little social awkwardness seems so mundane by comparison.
And then the door swings open wider and Jude is there. My pulse stops—doesn’t slow, just ceases to exist for a second. Leave it to him to bring the fireworks.
Like the house, Jude seems smaller than I remember. Or maybe that’s because he has gone expressionless, his discomfort hard-crashing him. His hands dig into his pockets, searching for an anchor, pulling his shoulders into a hunch. It takes a lot to knock Jude off his game. Glad to see I can still have that effect on him.
When he opens his mouth, no sound comes out. It’s unusual for me to have to step up and be the better man when I’m around my big brother. But today is that day.

Slowly he backed away, nodding. Without a backward glance, and ignoring the shouts from Simpson naming him a traitor, Tierney walked the planks between the ships until he stood beside Samuel once more.
The grappling hooks were removed, sails were raised, and the rowers were put to rowing. Wind tunneled through his hair. The two ships soon became dots on the horizon, the twinkling of their lanterns slowly disappearing.
All he could think of was Rosamond.
He descended the stairs and marched toward the cabin. Fist to the door, he demanded she open it.
A second later, she stood before him, eyes wide, mouth agape, taking in the splatters of blood on his shirt.
“You’re alive,” she murmured, and then threw herself into his arms.
Without hesitation, Tierney wrapped her in his embrace, letting the warmth of her supple body sink into his and feeling the familiar rush of desire pummel him once again.
“What of the pirates? Is my father dead?”
“He was not aboard the ship. I left the English in the pirates’ hands.”
       “They are letting us go?”
“The pirates, aye. The English have no choice.”
Her hands splayed over his back massaging the sore muscles he’d worked so hard.
       “Thank God,” she murmured.
“He has nothing to do with this.” Tierney caught her gaze. “Nor this.” The very thing he’d wanted to do since first looking at her ruby lips had been to kiss her. And he denied himself no longer.
There was no tentative brush of lips, or even a gentle caress that would ease her into his kiss, but a hard, ferocious crush of his mouth to hers. Claiming her. Letting the rush of battle be replaced by the pulse of his craving.
The power behind his kiss startled him, and he fully expected her to shove at him, to rail against him for taking such liberties, but the lass only clung to him more. Sighed against his mouth, opened her lips for his invading tongue.

It's the most ridiculous undercover security job I've ever had to work. Corralling a bunch of six-year-olds while I try to do my job and keep anyone from knowing how clueless I really am. I manage to fool everyone. Except Kristin.

She's an actual teacher, and she's determined to find out what I'm really doing here. She doesn't trust me, and her daughter doesn't like me. And the worst part is that I'm starting to like them. A lot.

So now, instead of being the tough guy, I'm stuck with rowdy children and Christmas pageants and falling in love. It's not the way I thought I'd spend Christmas.

But he was only seventeen when his parents were killed during a storm on a California highway. Seven years later, another stormy night nearly took Vaughn's life. Now he's half a leg lighter, full of shame and doubt, and taking it out on everyone around him, even the woman he's loved most of his life.

T.J. Brisco is the girl next door. She and Vaughn grew up together, inseparable friends, then high school sweethearts. But when tragedy strikes, Vaughn retreats, and this time is no different. She's determined to help him recover from his devastating amputation, but Vaughn's not going to make it easy. When his anger becomes too much for T.J.'s shattered heart, she decides their story is over for good.

Now Vaughn is faced with the rest of his life—as an amputee, as a brother, as a man—and as T.J. moves on, Vaughn falls farther and farther behind. Can he learn to run fast enough to catch up to the only woman he'll ever love? Or will his pride stand in their way forever?

Excerpt

He waved over his head and kept moving, looking down to make sure his leg didn’t get caught on anything in the crowded space. While the trajectory of his leg could be controlled well because he had an intact knee joint, he couldn’t feel if anything below his knee got knocked or caught when he was in close quarters. It made the navigating somewhat more difficult, and since he preferred not to fall on his ass in front of half the town, he kept his gaze down.

Which was why he knocked right into something, eliciting a squeak that jolted him out of his hyperfocused state. His hands shot out in reflex, and he caught whatever—whoever—it was as they stumbled. The other person’s weight pulled him off-balance, and he was forced to take another step, planting his good leg to keep upright. The extra step meant that his victim was now virtually under him, bent back in a slight dip as he held what was definitely a her.

His gaze moved up from a set of perfect breasts snug in stretchy azure fabric with a deep V in the front, and on to a neck that was smooth and slim. And then he reached the face, that face, the face that haunted him day in and day out, even when he wanted nothing more than to be free of it.

“Sorry,” he murmured as they stayed frozen in their embrace, T.J.’s big brown eyes blinking at him. But then his gaze dropped, against his will, to her breasts again, and he jerked both him and T.J. upright, setting her away as much as he could in the middle of the tables, stools, and people.

T.J. cleared her throat and smoothed her tight, short dress. Vaughn was caught speechless at the vision of his wholesome, lifelong best friend wearing something that looked like it belonged in a Los Angeles nightclub. The brilliant shade of blue contrasted with her black hair and golden skin, making her glow like some sort of goddess.

Fuck, she was beautiful.
