REVIEW: Anomaly by Tonya Kuper

6:31 PM 1 Comments

Release Date: 11/25/14
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…

Worst. Birthday. Ever.
My first boyfriend dumped me – happy birthday, Josie!- my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl’s tonsils. Oh, and I’m officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…
Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.
When hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he’s the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

Review:
Anomaly captivated me from the first page especially with characters you will instantly like.  Josie is a total nerd, which I love, but she's not your average geek.  Josie has an ability every girl wants, to make a guy hot just by thinking about it.  That's not her only talent, but you immediately love a character who can do that.  Don't get me started on Reid, total bad boy protector with a feisty attitude, enough said.

Onto the story, you can tell when the book starts off that Josie's life is about to change and everything she knows is not what it seems.  In the beginning you find hints to stuff you'll learn about later and know there's more to the story than meets the eye.  I found the story flowed nicely, and kept me entertained throughout.  There wasn't any point in this book where I wanted to take a pause and come back to it later, I just wanted to plow through and find all the secrets.  Unfortunately I have to wait for the other two books to find out everything, but this was a great start to a trilogy.

REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: Darker Past by Jus Accardo

12:08 PM 0 Comments

A Darker Past (Darker Agency, #2) by Jus Accardo

Published: 11/11/14
Publisher: Entangled Teen

The past is Darker than they thought...

Between helping her mother with the Darker Agency and laying the smack down on monster baddies, Jessie Darker puts the “normal” in paranormal. But lately, things have gotten a little crazy...even for a smart-assed half-demon teenage girl.

For starters, Jessie’s been contracted into fifty-five years of annoying servitude. To a demon.

Then there’s Lukas Scott, her sexy new boyfriend. Once the former incarnation of Wrath, he’s been going through some...uh, changes. Like residual anger. And trading chaste hangouts for lusty make-out sessions.

But it’s when Lukas and Jessie accidentally release a Very Nasty Demon that things get really bad, setting into motion a chain of death and mayhem that threatens both Earth and the Shadow Realm. Jessie has exactly four days to fix it...before all of Hell breaks loose.

Move over girls, Jus new book is out! Jus is one of my favorite authors, her books always make me laugh, cry and sit at the edge of my chair waiting to see what happens next. I can happily tell you that Darker Past didn't disappoint one bit.

Jessie is back and almost better than ever... because you know, she now has to serve a demon for the next 55 years. But she has her boyfriend, her witch best friend is learning new tricks and her parents can finally be together. So life is looking good until a mirror breaking frees a demon and things get nasty!

I loved how Jus kept the characters voices true to themselves in this sequel. Jessie is a strong character you can do things on her own, while impulsive at times she takes the time to make the hard choices with a cool head. And best of all? she's not afraid to ask for help. Her snarky comments and humor kept me reading and laughing all day. I couldn't put it down.
Lukas is back and more swoon worthy than ever. Turning into a demon has its complications though, and is not easy to handle.
The relationship between Lukas and Jessie is great. The chemistry from the first book is still going strong but they face some problems along the way that takes it to another level.

I love how the secondary characters, like Jessie's parent, play such an important role in the plot and help the story move forward. Even Valefar, the demon owning  Jessie is a great fun addition. His habit of popping out of nowhere and in the middle of any situations creates some pretty funny moments. (Is it wrong that I like the bad guy?? He's kinda awesome with his mercurial temper)

The ending though.... yeah I might have to stalk Jus and ask for more soon... Like right now!

Excerpt

I think I get it then. That decision I saw in her eyes back in the kitchen. That’s what this, what I’m about for her, too. I’m just another part of whatever rebellion she started earlier today. About doing what she wants, not what’s expected of her.
“We’re not talking about me, though,” she says. “So you went to meet your friend, and then what happened?”
She keeps her eyes down as she picks up the gauze and begins winding it snugly around the knuckles of one hand, and then the other.
“He said the wrong thing.”
“Which was?”
“Dylan.” Now it’s her that’s pushing too hard. I didn’t want to talk about things with my friends, and I won’t talk about them with her, either, no matter how gorgeous she is.
“I’ll guess. You were mad about what he did, and he wasn’t sorry.”
“This isn’t middle school, Pickle. He didn’t hurt my feelings. He said some shit he had no business saying, and it pissed me off. The end.”
“But you don’t think some of that anger stems from what you feel is a betrayal of your friendship?”
She finishes taping down the last of the gauze, but doesn’t let go of my hand.
“I think you’re analyzing me again. Making things more complicated than they are.”
“And I think you’re just a guy who doesn’t like to admit he has feelings.” She drags out the word, teasing me with some goofy smile on her face. I turn my hand over so I can clutch her wrist. I curlmy other bandaged hand around her waist and pull her closer.
“I feel plenty of things.”
The teasing stops. She swallows.
“I wasn’t talking about that kind of feeling.”
With her standing and me sitting, I’m eye level with her chest. I see the sharp rise and fall as she sucks in a breath. I want her in my lap again, straddling me this time.
“Doesn’t mean we can’t talk about that kind of feeling. Or experiment with it.”
“Is that Stella girl an ex?”
I cough, surprised. My throat twists uncomfortably, and it takes me a couple of solid breaths to get a hold on myself.
“Ah, no. Stella and I have never dated.”
“Have you—”
“Do you ever run out of questions?”
“Not ever.” She turns playful again, and I’m done doing this the careful way. If she wants a rebellion, I’ll be the one to give it to her. I want her against me, and I’m tired of waiting.
I pull her forward, insinuating my knees between hers, and her body naturally follows, settling across my thighs. Her lips part, but she catches herself before she gasps this time. I keep her steady with my hands at her waist and say, “I’ll make you a deal. A question for a kiss.”
Tentatively, she lays her palms against my shoulders. They rest there, her grip light and casual. She ponders my offer for a moment, and it drives me mad that she can do that while our hips are inches away from alignment.
“Okay then. Are you—”
I cut her off. “Not so fast, Dylan Brenner. I’ve already answered one question. We’ve got to settle up first.”
I wrap her braid around my hand like I’ve been waiting to do all night, and I use it to pull her head back just enough that I can crush my mouth against hers.

REVIEW: Two Blue Lines by SC Montgomery

11:07 PM 0 Comments

TWO BLUE LINES (CROSSING THE LINE #1) BY SC MONTGOMERY
Published: October 23rd

His fear . . . Her secrets . . . Their choice.

What if the only girl you’ve ever loved lied to you?

Lied to everyone?

Those two blue lines changed everything for Reed Young and Melissa Summers. In more ways than one.

And now, he must decide for himself . . .

Man up or walk away?

SC Montgomery has created an emotional tale of first love, difficult choices, and impossible secrets.  A deliciously angsty debut you need to read for yourself.

***Reader Warning*** Two Blue Lines is the emotional, honest story of two teenagers whose lives are about to change forever.  While not glorified, or portrayed in detail, there are themes of sexual assault and teen pregnancy, as well as allusions to teenage drinking and some foul language.  It is all meant to create an honest, relevant novel, but please be aware and read only if you’re comfortable.

Two Blue Lines was quite a reading experience.  Before I get into the review, don’t disregard this book because pregnancy is one of the main parts of the plot.  Two Blue Lines had a beautiful story line and I honestly would have never picked it up if I wasn’t asked to do a review, and I’m glad I had the opportunity because it did open my eyes to a category Young Adult books could really use.  I’m sure there are some books out there for Young Adult, but I’ve never heard of them or looked for them.  Anyways, on to the review.

I have never read a book where one of the main characters was pregnant and if I did it wasn’t memorable like this book.  This book shows you the other side pregnancy and the struggles that they face, but also the sweet and rewarding moments.  Two Blue Lines is a Young Adult book, which shows how hard high school can be with a bun in the oven, from both the mother and father of the child.

Melissa and Reed, Reed and Melissa, that’s how they’re know to everyone in their community, you can’t have one without the other.  During their summer vacation from school, Melissa finds out just how hard and beautiful life can be.  Melissa is pregnant and trying so hard to keep it together, especially when her past leaves her with no option but to keep the baby.  Reed’s summer doesn’t turn out quite like he planned, who plans to knock up their girlfriend in high school and have all that weight on his shoulders?  Melissa is keeping something from him, but maybe it’s just the hormones?

What I enjoyed about Two Blue Lines was the fresh story and perspective.  Sometimes I just wanted to shake Melissa and Reed and tell them to not be stupid or be honest and some other stuff they did that annoyed me, but I still really felt for both characters.  The prequel Lines in the Sand really helps get a perspective on Reed and his life and relationship with everyone pre-Melissa and pre-pregnancy.  Two Blue Lines also makes some references to the locations you learn about in Lines in the Sand, so it  is helpful to read the prequel but if you want to just get right into the good stuff, it's okay to skip for know and go back to.

 Excerpt

Tears filled her eyes, reflecting the kaleidoscope of colors from the sky above. “I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lost you.”

I scooted over and pulled her close. “Why would you lose me?” Okay, sure, I’d had the fleeting thought of running for the hills, but I’d never leave her. Baby or not. My heart was too fully invested. God, didn’t she realize she was the first girl I’d ever kissed? She was the first person I thought about in the morning, the person I wanted to call when I was happy, when I was bummed . . . Melissa Summers had become my everything since I laid eyes on her in that middle school cafeteria. I couldn’t think of one single solitary thing that could make me leave her now. Besides, I had a responsibility to this baby.

She threw her arms around my neck and her tears soaked through my T-shirt. “What if you decided you hated me or the baby? What if . . . ?” She choked on a sob as I squeezed and shushed her.

“It’s okay, Mel. I’m not leaving you, and I could never hate you. Never. Or the baby. How could I?” I stroked her back as the fireworks popped furiously above us in a resounding finale.

It finally grew quiet, the smoke from the show settling down over the water, people around us mumbling and picking up their chairs. I continued to hold her, my eyes straying to a couple holding hands as they strolled, another not holding hands, not touching, obvious tension shimmering between them as they towed a fussy toddler. My heart ached that I couldn’t do more to ease her. “God, Mel, I love you so much,” I whispered, wishing she’d believe me. Wondering why she’d suddenly doubt. We may be in a heap of trouble, but I never wanted to lose the spark that made us. Even at sixteen, I knew it was special.

She finally pulled back and looked up into my eyes. I used the pad of my thumb to wipe the tears from her cheeks. She simply stared for several moments. We said nothing. I let her look. Maybe she’d find whatever reassurance she was seeking. Then, gently, her eyes slipped down to my mouth. I leaned in and kissed her, giving her all the love, all the promises, all the comfort I had.

And all the hope.
