He’s even more devastatingly gorgeous than before, and he’s much too close for comfort. Worse, he sees right through the walls she’s built over these last eight years, right into her heart and the secrets she’s guarding. Excerpt:
Angelle stopped beside a folding table boasting boxes of fresh, crispy cracklins and selected a thick piece. Cane watched, mesmerized, as she puckered those gorgeous lips and blew on the sliver. With a flirtatious glint in her eyes, she held it up to his mouth, and he opened.
Holy crap.
He’d had cracklins before. Fried pork fat was a standard gas station treat, usually shrink-wrapped and stale as shit. But this, fresh from the pot and piping hot, was unbelievable. Cane widened his eyes, and it was possible he even moaned. It was thatgood. And as he swallowed, Angel rewarded him with a rich, throaty laugh.
Ca c’est bon?” she asked, grinning when he grabbed another handful.
He touched her nose and popped a piece in his mouth. “Good would be an understatement.”
Grinning, she took a fried morsel for herself and sent the balding, overweight gentleman tending the table a wink. “Now that’s what we like to hear.” Then she closed her eyes as she savored the treat.
The sounds of Angel moaning, and watching her face soften in the throes of a foodgasm, had to be the sexiest damn thing Cane had ever seen. His pants tightened, embarrassingly so considering he knew the audience was still watching, but what pushed him over the edge was when her eyes opened. The pleasure in them was his undoing.
Feeling the weight of the crowd’s disapproving stares and not giving a damn, figuring now was as good a time as any to give the people the show they clearly wanted, he grasped her hip and tugged her forward, pausing only to inhale her gasp of surprise before brushing her mouth with his.
It was like setting off a damn forest fire.
Angelle, his shocking little hellcat, pounced. Forgetting all about their audience, or maybe not giving a damn either, she wound her arms around his neck, lifted onto her toes, and kissed him back with everything she had. Cane had intended to steal a quick taste, take the edge off his craving for her, and prove their point with the town’s people. But hell if he was gonna be the one to back down now. Tightening his grasp on her slim hips, he brushed his thumbs across the smooth, exposed skin near her waistband. He deepened the kiss, thrilling over her telltale shiver. Whimpering, she yanked on the hair at his nape and sucked his bottom lip into her mouth. Hot damn.
Okay, now he had to start backing down. With all her male relatives watching, not to mention the knives and axes still lying around from the butchering earlier, if Cane valued his life, he needed to wrangle control of the situation. He’d heard patience was a virtue. That was a line of bull—he’d always sucked at waiting for anything he wanted. But for Angel, he was willing to try.
Loosening his grip on her belt loops, Cane slowed the intensity of the kiss. He smoothed the hem of her shirt down, grazed her lips one last time, and, placing his forehead against hers, inhaled through his nose. Sunflowers mixed with cayenne may be his new favorite scent. Angelle released a heavy breath, a flush blooming on her cheeks. She darted a glance at the crowd, then looking into his eyes, grinned lazily. “My goodness. If anyone doubted we were a couple before, I guess that showed them.”

Extended Excerpt
Without stopping or even slowing his stride, he grabs a map from a vendor and flips it open. “So Lethal Xperience is at the back of the park. We’ll hit that first and then make our way up to the front.”
He seems unaware that the length of his legs far exceeds my own. As I frantically attempt to match his stride, I must pant or wheeze because he finally looks down at me, no doubt pink-faced and wide-eyed both from the sensory overload surrounding us and my huffing at a near jog to stay beside him. He grins. “Try to keep up, Short Stuff.”
I grit my teeth with determination and somehow keep myself from muttering, Yes, Master. But the thought still makes me smile. Cat must be rubbing off.
We pass a circular ride filled with fake horses going up and down. Giggling and drooling children clap their adorable hands from their belted saddles while a spirited tune blares overhead. Just past that is a miniature roller coaster made to look like a giant, happy centipede. The child in the front seat waves to his mother as the cart dips, and his squeal of joy tails behind him. It’s too bad that not all roller coasters can be five feet tall.
Then I get a wicked idea.
Austin believes I am a child, naive and boring, and, it would seem, without any humor. This second challenge is supposed to be about fun, and nothing—not even the lead role in a prestigious play with a crowd of a thousand—will give me more joy than turning the tables on him, even if only for a moment.
Looking back at the children’s ride, I grab Austin’s elbow and say innocently, “Is this not the roller coaster you are looking for?”
He stops rather abruptly and peers at me through squinted eyes. “You know, it’s like you look normal…” He trails off and shakes his head. He points a long tan finger at the centipede ride and in a tone dripping with condescension explains, “Less, Arthropod Picnic is a kiddie ride. It’s made for pint-size ankle-biters ages three and under.”
I try my best to look disappointed. I do everything I can to contain my mounting delight. But after no more than a few brief moments, I let forth a victorious giggle.
Realization dawns on his face. “You think you’re funny, huh?”
When I nod, he chuckles. He leans back on his heels and lets his gaze travel over my body. Humor dissipates as my skin prickles to life. On Austin’s slow ascent back up, he pauses to look me in the eye and an emotion crosses his face. It’s so fleeting—gone and there in an instant—that I cannot catch it.
“So, you think you’re ready to play at the big girl table now.” The left side of his mouth kicks up in a grin. “We’ll just have to see about that.”
The apparent taunt and Austin’s added wink spur me on.
This is my chance to prove to him that I’m not the timid girl I once was. To prove to myself that I’m no longer the child of my youth but a woman ready for the future.
I sashay toward a person dressed as a shiny nugget of gold posing for pictures with children, feeling Austin watching me, his gaze on my every step like a physical touch. My legs feel wobbly under my skirt, but an energizing spark ignites in my blood. I glance over my shoulder, confirming I have his complete attention, and then with an outward shrug (and an inner dance), I reply with every ounce of confidence I can muster, “Yes. We will.”
Austin’s smile widens. The sounds and patrons of the park fade away, and it is as if we are the only two around. I don’t know what is happening…I scarcely even recognize myself in this moment. Being with Austin does that. It turns me into someone else.
And I like who I become.
I watch his slow saunter, my body poised with tension. I don’t know what is going to happen next, but I wouldn’t trade the delicious expectation for anything. Austin doesn’t stop until he is right in front of me, close enough that I have to look up to meet his demanding blue gaze, and so close that warmth fans across my face as he says in a low voice, “Careful, girl. You’re playing with fire.”
“I’ve been careful my whole life,” I tell him, surprising myself with the resentment ringing in my tone. But it’s the truth. “And you know, I think it’s about time for me to be a little…” I bite the corner of my bottom lip, searching for exactly the right word to describe the emotions and thoughts that have surfaced the last few days. When I find it, I smile and wiggle my eyebrows suggestively “Wild.”
Austin sucks in a breath. He searches my eyes and I boldly stare back, praying that he cannot see my knees shaking. Then, obviously concluding that I meant every word, he flashes his devilish grin. “I can work with that.”

BLOG TOUR: SHILOH

SHILOH by HELENA SORENSEN
Published April 22nd 2013
Publisher: Alpha Wolf Publishing

In a world of perpetual darkness, a boy is born who wields remarkable power over fire. Amos is no more than seven when he kills a Shadow Wolf and becomes a legend in Shiloh. He would be destined for great things were it not for the stories his father tells about a world beyond the Shadow and a time before the Shadow. Only madmen hold to such tales, and in Shiloh, they have always come to bad ends.

Amos is fearless. He walks with easy confidence, certain that the Shadow cannot touch him. Even his family is in awe of him. His father marvels at his skill with the bow, his mother thanks the gods that he has all the courage she lacks, and his sister, Phebe, worships him for saving her from an attack of the Shadow Cats.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17876268-shiloh?from_search=true
On a trip to the village of Emmerich, Amos rescues the Magistrate’s son, Simeon, from the village bullies. Simeon, fair-skinned and pale-eyed like other Dreamers in Shiloh’s history, becomes Amos’s constant companion and dearest friend. Simeon becomes a part of Amos’s family, listening to fireside stories told in a way he’s never heard them before and learning to wield a bow and arrow.

The year the boys turn twelve, they are itching to prove themselves. An impetuous plan to steal a beautiful lantern goes miserably awry, and the lantern’s owner prophecies that Amos will be devoured by the Shadow. For the first time, a seed of fear is planted in Amos’s mind, and when his father is killed by a Shadow Wolf on the last day of the Great Hunt, the fear takes hold. If so great and brave a man as his father could fall to the Shadow, what hope has he?

Hello Helena! Welcome To We All Make Mistakes In Books! I’m Cynthia and this is Diana and we’re very excited to have you with us today.
Want some cupcakes or cookies?
Cookies, please.  If you have them hot from the oven, and the chips are ready to melt on my fingertips, I'm all yours.

First of all, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Well, I live in Nashville.  I've been married almost 11 years, and I have two gorgeous, exhausting children.  I studied music in college, but I ended up teaching English.  It's a long story.

What made you want to be a writer? Any book or author in particular that made you go “this is what I want to do!”?

I've always been writing in some form or another.  In elementary school, it was poems and essays.  Later, it was music.  To be totally honest, after I had my son, I needed a project to give me a mental break from baby talk and such.  My mom found a file on an old computer that had the beginnings of a story I'd started in college.  She sent it to me, and the rest is history.  I honestly never imagined that I could write a novel.  It was a stunning leap of faith, or possibly stupidity.
As far as influential authors go, I have to say C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.  Of course.  They're just ridiculous.  But I also have to give a great deal of credit to Nathaniel Hawthorne and his Twice Told Tales.

Readers want to know what is Shiloh about?

This question should be easy, but it isn't.  The book covers a 13-year span, and it has four characters that you could call "main characters."  It is set in a world of darkness...a vague, shadowy world where the people are haunted and hunted by Ulff, the Lord of Shadows, and his dark forces.  Amos, the main main character, is gifted with power over fire, and he is extraordinarily fearless until he faces a crisis.  When the fear takes hold of him, terrible things happen.  But Shiloh is a story of hope, in the face of impossible odds.  It's a story of fear and of faith, of remembering who we are.

We’re big fans of music. If you had to choose one song to represent the book, which one would be?

Ack!  Mumford and Sons comes close three times, with "Sigh No More," "Roll Away Your Stone," and "Lover of the Light."  But Emily Dickinson's poem, "Will There Really Be a Morning?" is more suited to the themes of the story.  Julie Lee set that poem to music.  There's also Gungor's "This Is Not the End."

What was the hardest and easiest part of writing Shiloh?
The easiest part was choosing names for characters.  Once you find the right name, the character's facial features and personality and habits start taking shape almost on their own.  It's great fun.  The hardest part was keeping at it, when I so regularly struggled with the thought that I was just kidding myself, that all this effort was a waste of time, that I had absolutely no talent as a writer, and that no one would ever read my silly little story or care about it.  Sigh.  It's enormously difficult to fight through four drafts when those are the thoughts that plague you.

Can you share something about what you are writing right now?
Yes!  I'm writing the prequel to Shiloh right now.  This book, called Seeker, tells the story of Evander and the Lost Clan.  It's a sad story, but it's beautiful.  Oh, I'm so excited about it.

And to go along with our blog theme, Can you tell us about a time you or your characters made a Mistake that taught you a life lesson?
In Shiloh, Amos faces terrible loss, and it is in the very heart of his pain that he begins to question everything that he held to be true about his world.  We all do it.  We allow transitory circumstances to shape our understanding of the world.  We make impulsive decisions based on feelings of rage or grief or desperation or fear.  It's almost never a good idea, and Amos has to walk a very hard path to find his way back to what he knew to be true all along.

Randomness

Day or night?
Day

Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate.  Easiest question ever.

Coffee or Tea?
Tea

Favorite movie?
The LOTR Trilogy.  I also love A&E's version of Pride and Prejudice.

What are you reading right now or what was the last one?
Just finished Leif Enger's Peace Like a River, and now I'm working on Elizabeth Wein's A Coalition of Lions.

Thanks so much for stopping by today Helena! We hope to see you again soon ;)

ABOUT HELENA SORENSEN

t started with those Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books. My mother would take us to the library when I was in elementary school, and I would check out several at a time. I would read every possible option, making every possible choice, sometimes jumping from the train, sometimes going with the mysterious stranger, sometimes returning to camp, until the book made absolutely no sense.

Then, in fourth grade, I read The Chronicles of Narnia, and I was hooked. Every book in the series seemed better than the last, and I understood how much joy could be found in stories. That year my teacher read Where the Red Fern Grows to our class, and I cried. There again was the power of words, of story.

Later, my father read The Eyes of the Dragon to my brother and me. We were swept away, wondering at the fate of the boy in the tower and fearing Flag’s devices.

Then came Little Women, and Gone with the Wind, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Wuthering Heights, Brave New World, and Sense and Sensibility. Tragically, I didn’t discover Tolkien until I was almost an adult, but I made up for my late arrival to the party by reading most of his published works.

It is only in recent years that I’ve discovered how deep is my love for epic fantasy. In preparation for writing Shiloh, and as part of my independent education in literature, I have read scores of books: books for children and young adults and adults, National Book Award Winners, and Newberry Honor Books. But I always come back to the fantasy novels. I love the idea that anything is possible in the world of fantasy. There is no limit to the imagination, and I can choose to embark on any kind of adventure.

"Do you want me to be dangerous?" he asked, his voice husky and low.
I gulped, and for a moment I was incapable of speech. But he was quiet, waiting. "No. I don't."
"Then I'm not dangerous at all," he murmured. His gaze moved from my eyes to my mouth. "You've never been safer than you are at this moment." I shivered as his breath tickled my skin. Our lips were mere millimeters apart when the sky shattered in a kaleidoscope of colored light.

We didn’t know how much we had to lose until we were infected with magic. Sam was in love, Juliette was the main caretaker for her siblings, and Ana and her dad planned the best parties in New York. But we lost it all when we were shipped to Chebeague, an exclusive school for newly infected mages.

Everyone knows about the mages, those who survive the infection and end up with magical abilities. We’ve seen the power of magic, the high-paying jobs, and the world fame. But we never saw the cost. We didn’t know we’d be forced to give up everything: sanity, family, even the right to talk on the phone.

We didn’t know mage was just another word for prisoner.

Review:The Space Between Us

 New Adult Contemporary

Date Published: 9/17/2013

She’s scarred by her past.

ANDREA EVANS is traumatized and guilt-ridden by the death of her fiancée. Tired of the gossiping small town, she travels to New York City to pursue her dream of dance. When her dreams don’t instantly come to fruition, she ends up working at a strip club with her best friend.

He’s uncertain of his future.

COOPER DAVIDSON is a famous photographer and reality television star trying to flee from his own life filled with paparazzi, mental health clinics, and a cheating wife who is pregnant.

When Andrea and Cooper’s paths cross, they realize how damaged and in need of escapism they both are. The two create an arrangement to explore the space in between chaos and order with one another. The rules are simple—no emotional connections, no talking about the past, no speaking of the future, and when one finds order, the other walks away.

All is well until Cooper falls in love with Andrea. Will Andrea open up and let someone else into her closed off heart? Can Cooper stop the tabloids and his crazed wife from exposing his past and painting Andrea as a prostitute to the world before her life spirals back down to the land of chaos?

The Space in Between in a lovely story about love and healing. I couldn't put it down.

‘Andrea. Over here is Chaos. Which we both know pretty well. And over here…” The right hand index finger flew up. “Over here is Order. I’m gonna assume both of us are pretty damn far from Order, yet we’ve already hit rock bottom Chaos. So how about we just explore the space in between the two?”

Andrea lost her fiance in a car accident. She was driving and now everyday in her small town is hell, so she decides to move to New York and persue her dream of dancing... Instead, she ends up working as a stripper.

Cooper's marriage wasn't very good, but when his wife tells him she's pregnant and he realises that she cheated he's had enough. While strugeling with his divorce and fighting off paparazzi, he meets Andrea and together they start exploring the chaos that is their lives.

I loved this book's pace. It wasn't forced and the relationship between Cooper and Andie is slow. They have to heal to love again. They have to forgive to move on.

While at first the relationship may be a bit fast, you understand their need to be with someone. All the characters are so weel developed and important to the story.

And boy did Cooper got a good place in my Book Boyfriend List. He's one of the sweetest characters I've read this year. He's perfect. Just like that.

Brittainy's debut novel is a sweet romance that will hook you from the start. The Space in Between is delicate, slow and heartwarming. A must read!

Chaos (Kardia Chronicles #1) by Christine O’Neil

My name is Maggie Raynard. After sixteen years being just plain me, suddenly, when I lose my temper, my fingers become weapons of mass destruction. Turns out I'm a semi-god, descended from Aphrodite. Sounds cool in theory, but when I accidentally put my ex-boyfriend in a coma, things go downhill pretty fast.

Now some new guy named Mac Finnegan has made it his mission in life to continually piss me off. I'm stuck learning how to use my new powers while also dealing with regular high school problems, and with this annoying and super-hot-guy all up in my business, I'm about to flip out.

But it gets worse. I just learned there's this watchdog council of semis who keep an eye out for any bad apples. They think I'm the baddest one in the bunch and want to take me out before I do any more damage. My nemesis Mac might turn out to be my salvation, only he's got secrets of his own...and they may just kill us both.

About Christine O'Neil

Christine O'Neil was born and raised in Connecticut, where she spent most of her childhood outdoors catching salamanders, frogs and colds. When she wasn't terrorizing Mother Nature, she was curled up under the covers with her nose in a book. As an adult, she's stopped stalking amphibians, but still loves books. When she isn't reading, she likes to spend her time people-watching. In fact, she's probably watching you RIGHT NOW O_O She's also pretty obsessed with writing YA books, but if she had to pick another profession she would be a ninja...or a Professor of the Dark Arts. Christine also writes adult romance under the pen name Christine Bell.

Interview with Mac Finnegan

Hi Mac! Welcome to We All Make Mistakes In Books. I'm Cynthia and this is Diana. Get yourself comfortable :)

What drew you to Maggie?
I'm not drawn to her. I have a job to do and she's it.
ok...

Morning person or night?
I don't need a whole lot of sleep so I'm good with both.

What is the most challenging thing to deal with right now?
Snarky, smart-mouthed descendants of Aphrodite who don't even realize how frigging dangerous they are and won't listen to reason.

Favorite food?
I guess lasagna.

Best qualities?
Loyalty. Honor.

Something you don't like about yourself?
My inability to shut off my emotions completely no matter how hard I try. I need to work on that, because it complicates the job.

Something no one knows about you?
Well if I tell you, then someone will know it, won't they?
Sorry, I don't mean to be a prick. *rakes a hand through hair* *blows out a sigh* It's just been a rough few months. Let's see, a secret, yeah? Well, I have a soft spot for turtles. They remind me of my grandfather. Like little old men with their wrinkled faces and hard shells. I just like 'em.

If you could tell Maggie one thing--what would it be?
*sigh* *looks around* Just between me and you? *both nod vigorously and lead in*
I'd tell her that I wish things could be different. I wish we were two regular teenagers who could go to the movies and hang out together and laugh and...other stuff. But that's not the cards we were dealt, so we've just got to push through, right? *grim smile* We done here?
